Driving a Nail through Butter
Almost daily someone either asks me about improving communication skills or makes a statement regarding their inability to very easily or effectively communicate with others. This is especially true when you are dealing with children, teenagers and business associates.
I like to tell them it’s like driving a nail through butter. You want to make your point, but it’s far easier than you think and most people tend to overdo it and go too far.
- Consider the cultural or background differences of others.
- Consider what you are going to say before you say it.
- Speak in a comfortable tone and on the level of the listener.
- Make your point clearly and concisely without rambling.
- Listen intently and be aware of what others have to say.
- Easy and smooth. Good communication flows smoothly.
You want your chance to be heard and to make a point, but be easy and smooth when you conduct yourself. Make sure your body posture and motions as well as facial expressions match the words coming out of your mouth and the feelings or thoughts being expressed.
