A Yearning for Learning
Children are learning machines. During the developmental and formative years of 2 to 12 they are constantly comparing, exploring and discovering new details and situations in the world around them.
Around age 12 they begin to focus much more on social interaction, complex group structures and their own interdependence and independence. There is rarely any better time for them to learn new languages than during these initial years before they become very set in their ways and the primary language they use to communicate with those around them.
The key is to get them interested in something that prompts them to learn the language while drawing their focus away from the learning process.
Our girls are learning the Japanese language. They go to school each Saturday in a totally Japanese school for this purpose.
However, the learning process slows at home even though their mother constantly speaks to them in this language. Our lives are a mix of the English and Japanese languages to facilitate this process.
Then I introduced them to the music of Morning Mesume, the constantly evolving Japanese girl musical group. Their interest in that music and dance has prompted them to focus on the lyrics which are, you guessed it, in Japanese. They learn while focused on the music and not the learning process.
They want to learn! They beg their mother to write down the lyrics so they can sing along in Japanese.
If you have children and want them to learn another language or almost any subject involve them with things that are fun while learning. Things that make them want to learn more and faster.
The learning process doesn’t have to be a struggle.
