History Created the Holiday
As we near the 4th of July celebrations I cannot help but think of how many people have lost touch with the history that creates the holiday.
In many eastern countries holidays are strongly associated with the remembrance of ancestors and the ancient meanings that originated the event. Westerners tend to focus more on the celebration than the reason behind it.
As children we get so caught up in the fantasy and imagination of bright lights, gifts or fireworks and the adults around don’t inspire and tell us of the true meanings and history behind the event.
They skim over the past or avoid the issue altogether leaving the child to develop an association of the holiday with nothing more than the superficial celebration.
Take the time to enhance the knowledge and pride of your children with the true reasons why we celebrate instead of leaving them thinking it is nothing more than gifts or fireworks.
Have a wonderful and safe 4th of July, but take a moment to truly remember why we celebrate that day.
You’ll feel better about your country and yourself.
