The Child is NOT in Charge

Jul 10 2008

Recently I spent some time with a family that was having troubles dealing with their two young children ages 6 and 8. The children were demanding, loud and threw mild to moderate temper tantrums.

I watched the parents in action and immediately their weaknesses began to show through their decisions around the children.

Whenever one of the children wanted something they would begin to cry, complain loudly or stomp and pout. Eventually one parent or the other would give in to the demands of the child in question just to end the display of poor behavior.

Parents are the adults in the relationship with children. Adults must set the standards and rules for children to follow as they grow and mature. When you give in to the child you are no longer in control and the child is now controlling the situation and your living experience to some degree.

I see parents give over control of their lifestyle and decisions to children every day. Children should never control the living patterns of the adults around them. Learn to follow several simple rules and your relationship and living process with your children will improve dramatically.

  • Set rules and patterns well in advance.
  • Make certain children understand the rules.
  • Stand firm on your rules, patterns and decisions.
  • Diffuse the child’s actions by ignoring their pleading.
  • Never give in and simply reward a child for bad behavior.
