It Did Not Have To Be This Way
Scanning through the news I came across one story that brought back memories of athletic triumph and personal defeat that also defines a trend over the past decade or so in professional sports.
Marion Jones had requested that President Bush reduce her jail sentence.
The tragic side to this story is that it didn’t have to be that way. Marion, in fact almost every one of the sports personalities that have been tarnished by the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids could have performed as well or better than their competition even without the drugs.
These were athletes with amazing gifts of human potential far beyond the average person and they squandered it all away trying to be “just a little bit better”.
Now, before we rush off to condemn the athlete remember the terrible pressure most are under to perform well, meet the expectations of all of their sponsors and avoid being traded or dropped from multi-millon dollar contracts with stipulations that they excel.
Sports Heroes and legends aren’t developing like they did when I was a child. It seems that few can make it through an entire career without falling by the wayside in some domestic or legal situation.
Still, with all that natural talent it did not have to be this way.
