Better Patterns for Better Golf

Jul 14 2010

There are several levels to any competitive sport. First, are those that play for fun, then the people that take their effort seriously and finally come the professionals that play for a living.

People seeking fun don’t need or desire rigidity in the structure of the game beyond the standard rules of play.

However, those that take any sport seriously enough to invest deeply into their time and money for equipment, training and active play are constantly and consistently seeking new methods of improvement.

When the results truly matter the process of play is paramount to the success and satisfaction of the individual.

Yes, I work with amateur and professional team sports also and the results are just as important in the long run, but it is in individual sports such as golf and tennis that peak performance and maximum potential become critical.

Team sports allow one to have an off day every now and then, but individual sportspeople don’t have that luxury. Have a bad day and you go home with a big frown on your face and poor results to show for the effort.

At the professional level that can put a large dent in your end-of-year bottom line and the quality of lifestyle for your family and support group.

I have focused on golf for some time because of the heavy demand golf places on focus, concentration and the need for consistent unified effect. Unlike tennis which has a direct opponent, golf pits the individual against self and course.

The process of golfing is defined by specific patterns of thought and acceptance. If these patterns are not strengthened and refined it becomes a matter of spraying the ball all over. The ball seems to have a mind of its own and the process becomes frustrating leading to a loss of self-control and mental acuity.

Once these patterns are defined for the golfer and tweaked with practice the results come naturally and quickly. Generally it takes 6 sessions or less to trigger the skills within most individuals.

With scratch to 10 handicappers our average is 2.89 strokes under handicap and with high handicappers the average improvement is 9.73 strokes.

Almost any serious golfer with a 10 handicap or less would love to avoid leaving almost 3 strokes on the course per round. It is possible, all it takes is the decision to get better and a little willingness to learn and improve.

Golf patterns layer upon themselves. The single stroke becomes the hole and the holes become the entire round. Therefore, the mechanics of each stroke, mental acuity and ability to access and release stored potential are vital to overall result.

The best equipment in the world won’t help much if your mental game is weak or you are simply unable to convert potential into action and result.

Golf, like triathlon or track and field reacts well to psycheological training.

That, along with the fact that I love the game of golf and the beauty of golf courses makes it one of my favorite sports of choice for clients. I even suggest to other clients, especially entertainers, that they consider taking up the game of golf.

Many already have.

Define and refine the patterns of the game and get better results starting today.
